Advanced PET-CT Scan in Indore
See what other scans miss. A PET scan spots trouble inside your cells — often way before it shows up on a regular CT or MRI. Whether it's cancer, a heart concern, or a brain condition, get clear answers early and plan your next step with confidence.
What Is a PET Scan?
A PET scan (full form: Positron Emission Tomography) is a special type of body scan that goes deeper than normal tests. Instead of just showing what your organs look like from outside, it tells the doctor how well they are actually working from the inside — right down to your cells.
Unlike CT scans or MRIs, which show the physical shape and organs of the body, a PET scan checks how your cells are working. It shows cell activity by measuring how they use sugar, oxygen, and other chemical processes.
Sick cells, especially cancer cells, use up sugar much faster than normal cells. The PET scan shows this by tracking where a special radioactive tracer builds up in your body.
Cellular Level
Finds signs of sickness before physical changes show up on other scans.
Metabolic Map
Shows exactly how your organs are functioning and processing nutrients.
Nuclear Medicine
Uses safe, short-lived radioactive tracers for ultra-precise diagnosis.
Early Detection
Crucial for early-stage cancer diagnosis and treatment monitoring.
How Does a PET Scan Work?
Tracer Injection
A radiotracer (usually 18F-FDG) is injected intravenously. It travels through the blood to your cells.
Absorption Period
You rest for 45–90 minutes while the tracer is absorbed by metabolically active tissues.
Scanning Phase
The PET scanner detects gamma rays emitted from the tracer as it interacts with your body.
Image Creation
Sophisticated algorithms build a 3D map showing where the most activity is occurring.
Specialised PET Scan Types
Different radiotracers are used to target specific organs and conditions.
Whole Body FDG PET-CT
Cancer detection, staging, treatment monitoring, and fever of unknown origin.
Brain FDG PET
Dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and epilepsy seizure localization.
PSMA PET-CT
Gold standard for Prostate cancer detection and monitoring recurrence.
DOTA-NOC PET-CT
Pancreatic, gastrointestinal, and pulmonary neuroendocrine tumours (NETs).
Cardiac PET
Heart viability assessment and coronary artery disease evaluation.
Bone / NaF PET
Detecting bone metastasis in prostate, breast, and lung cancers.
Clinical Indications
Cancer Care
Essential for staging, monitoring treatment response (chemo/radiation), and detecting recurrence in lymphoma, lung, breast, and colorectal cancers.
neurology
Diagnosing Alzheimer's and other dementias, mapping seizure focus for epilepsy surgery, and distinguishing recurrence from radiation necrosis in brain tumours.
Cardiology
Viability assessment to determine if "hibernating" heart muscle can recover after a heart attack via bypass or angioplasty.
PET Scan vs CT Scan vs MRI
| Feature | PET Scan | CT / MRI |
|---|---|---|
| Shows | Function / Metabolism | Anatomy / Structure |
| Cellular Detail | Extreme | Moderate |
| Best For | Cancer / Metabolism | Trauma / Organs |
| Early Detection | Yes (Cellular Level) | Only after physical change |

Preparation Checklist
24 Hours Before
- • High-protein, low-carb diet (avoid sugar, rice, roti)
- • No Exercise: Avoid gym, yoga, or heavy walking
- • No caffeine, alcohol, or tobacco products
6 Hours Before
- • Fast completely — no food or drink
- • Water is Allowed: Keep sipping plain water — it helps flush out the tracer later and keeps your body ready for the scan
- • Diabetic patients: Contact us for insulin adjustment
Patient Safety & Insurance
Radiation Safety
The radiation dose is comparable to natural background radiation over several months. It is safe for almost all adults. Pregnant women should inform the doctor immediately.
Insurance Coverage
Most major policies cover PET scans as day-care procedures when medically necessary. PET-CT is also covered under Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) for recommended cancer markers.
